Hi there! I’m horror author Mary SanGiovanni, and this is the first issue of my reimagined, rebooted author newsletter. Thanks for subscribing, and please forgive any weird text hiccups as I navigate the new system.
Every author follows an individual path throughout a career. What works for some may not work for others, and no overnight success story really happens overnight. I’m pleased with and thankful for what I’ve accomplished in my career so far, but I want to keep growing, keep evolving, keep reaching and connecting with new readers. I believe this newsletter might be a way to do this.
So what’s going on with me? What is the meat and potatoes of this newsletter?
Well, currently, I am working on a sequel to THRALL. It is tentatively titled NULL, and I am having a great time writing it. I am working on a novella called PARTIAL PLACES, and will be starting a novella with Ed Lee and one with Tom Monteleone in the next month or so. I’m also working on a novella with Matt Wildasin. I’m writing a number of personalized short stories for readers which I hope to be able to put into a collection in 2023. Into 2023, I would like to compile written transcripts/notes for Cosmic Shenanigans episodes into a non-fiction book about cosmic horror in entertainment.
I’m also planning a wedding and putting together the particulars of Borderlands Bootcamp classes and workshops.
Oh! And I have a new message board at Brian Keene’s Keenedom. Come by and say hi!
For Patreon and newsletter subscribers, I’m offering a sneak peak of the cover art for NULL (and a sneak peak at one of the monsters only hinted at in Thrall…).
Beautiful, isn’t it? Let me know what you think!
This month’s cosmic horror recommendation: OFFSEASON: not to be mistaken with Jack Ketchum’s story of the same name, this movie, currently on Shudder, is a quiet, genuinely creepy story with a Lovecraftian premise (I don’t want to give it away, but fairly early on in the movie, the main character explains it and Lovecraft fans will recognize the source material concept). There are stellar performances by Jocelin Donahue, Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, and Jeremy Gardner, and some eerie scenes that stick in your head. It’s a kind of Lovecraft-meets-Silent-Hill flick, and I really enjoyed it.
I think that’s it for this month. Next issue will probably be closer to mid- to late-December, and I’ll get on a regular schedule. Thanks for subscribing. I appreciate your support.
So excited to hear you're working on a THRALL sequel!!
